Extension of the library presents the community with a unique opportunity to reconfigure its village center, fostering the creation of squares and open spaces that promote the quality of place. Currently, vehicular through traffic dominates the area.
The new village square is poised to become the center of the village with a true quality of place. The public space is deliberately designed to encourage movement at pedestrian pace. By widening the course of the stream, a near-natural recreational area is fashioned within the revitalized village center. Terraced seating steps are included in the design, forming an elevated area for reading and various outdoor activities. The community library extension, a single-story glass structure, embraces the existing building along the side facing the square and defines the village square to the south that opens onto the street. The architecturally strict nature of the old building is juxtaposed with a bright and airy pavilion, which, despite its almost temporary appearance, provides inviting and versatile spaces with a quality of place for year-round enjoyment. The relationship between the church and the village square is preserved. The existing village structure will be further enhanced and supported.
